Still Trading In Trap Music for Podcasts

The holidays are coming up, which means family, friends, food, and long-distance traveling. When I’m traveling for an extended period of time, my favorite thing to do is to listen to podcasts. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I share my love for podcasts quite often. I created a list of my favorite shows back in October of 2017, and since then, the list has grown. To understand why I’m “trading” in trap music for podcasts, you’ll have to read about it here.

Because I love sharing things that I find worthwhile, I’ve listed below some of the new podcasts that I’ve picked up since last year and I’m giving you a more in-depth look into what I like about them. I’m also sharing with you the episodes from various shows that have helped me out tremendously and that I shamelessly listen to over and over again. You’re welcome.

Updated Listens

The Read

I’m a little late to this party (ok, I’m mad late) but I’m so glad I made it. I started listening to The Read back in December 2017 and I have not missed a week of their foolishness SINCE. Kid Fury and Crissle hilariously tackle pop culture topics that leave me laid out every week. They cover everything from politics, to reality TV drama, to real-world drama, etc. My fave part of their show HAS to be their listener letters. You’ll see why once you listen to one of their episodes. Give them a listen every Thursday.

Jesus and Jollof

Two of my favorite Nigerians, Luvvie Ajayi and Yvonne Orji, got together and created a podcast ya’ll. Life=Made. What I love most about this show is that Yvonne and Luvvie share the ups and downs of being in the entertainment/influencer world in the most authentic and hilarious way possible. Right now, they are taking a break until Season 2, but you can catch up on Season 1 here!

Rants and Randomness

Clearly, I’m a fan of Luvvie Ajayi lol. She also has her own podcast where she rants about random topics and interviews entertainers, thought leaders, and other dope people that do amazing things. Give it a listen!

Woman Evolve with Sarah Jakes Roberts

Chiiilllleee! This is a good one. I get petty, ratchet, and Jesus all in one show. Sarah talks about everything under the sun such as her love for Chick-Fil-A spicy chicken sandwiches to how we can evolve into all that God has called us to be. She also breaks down pop culture through her segments “Hail Mary” and “Rescue Eve” and answers listener questions through her “Sliding in my DMs” portion of the show. The cool thing about her podcast is that she also includes her audience, the Woman Evolve delegation, into the conversation through the Facebook live platform. It’s a MUST listen!

The Mattie James Show

Mattie is easily one of the best influencers out there right now. In my opinion, her transparency and authenticity is unmatched. I have goals of being a reputable influencer in the future and the knowledge that Mattie shares on all of her platforms has helped me out tremendously! If you’re an influencer, blogger, creative, etc...this one is mandatory.

Episodes on Repeat

I have shamelessly listened to the following episodes SEVERAL times. They are that good.

“Stick With Your Plan A”

Myleik interviewed Kahlana Barfield Brown in this episode on the My Taught You podcast and it was glorious. Kahlana shared her story of how she made risky boss moves and climbed the ranks at InStyle Magazine, where she now serves at the Fashion & Beauty Editor-At-Large. I was so inspired by her story for many reasons, but ultimately, because Kahlana never gave up on her dream, she worked hard, and she stuck with her Plan A.

“Lifestyle Blogger Dayna Bolden on How to Turn Your Influence Into Your Income”

Dayna breaks its All. The. Way. Down. in this episode on the Side Hustle Pro podcast. Dayna and Nicaila converse about her story of how she went from working as a sales associate at Under Armour to now being a full-time blogger and influencer is awe-inspiring. If you’re not following her right now, I would suggest you do right now. She gives great tips for content creators that has helped me in my efforts to create

“Stop Shoulding on Yourself”

Listen, Dr. Joy got me together in only nine minutes in this short, but impactful, episode on the Therapy for Black Girls podcast. I’ll admit, I’m very hard on myself sometimes. Especially when it comes to analyzing where I currently am in life. I say things like “I should be making this much money right now” or “I should be weighing this many pounds” and other things that I constantly beat myself up about. Dr. Joy gives tips on how to shift your perspective and to stop “shoulding” yourself.

“Deun on Creating Authentically”

Deun shares her story of transitioning from the education industry into the creative space as a photographer and illustrator in this episode of the Hey, Girl podcast. Her and Alex Elle have an intimate conversation on what it means to create from a place of authenticity and why that’s important. This episode inspired me to go after my passions and create the things that I wished existed in this world.
